Healing Trauma in EFT for Couples & Individuals

Healing Trauma in EFT for Couples & Individuals

Intimate relationships are where the pain of trauma comes alive.

It's the most common place where partners will frequently and unexpectedly trigger trauma ... causing disconnect, arguments, shutting down, and isolation.

In this workshop, you will learn how we as therapists can help traumatized couples and individuals experience the freedom, security, and excitement of love when they've likely never felt that way before. Rooted in attachment science, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFT/EFIT) can reliably transform pivotal traumatic moments so your traumatized clients can fully engage in their lives again.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), pioneered by Dr. Sue Johnson, is incredibly effective and powerful at working with couples and individuals with a trauma history and PTSD... because EFT gets right to the heart of the problem, providing a safe connection, and creating a path forward to the loving relationships and connections our clients so badly desire.

Trauma PTSD can cause a range of symptoms, including flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and depression. EFT is based on the idea that emotions play a key role in our lives and our relationships. It focuses on helping people to understand and express their emotions in a healthy way.

EFT has been found to be an effective treatment for Trauma and PTSD in some studies. It may help to reduce symptoms such as flashbacks and nightmares, and it may also help to improve mood and anxiety.

EFT can help people with Trauma and PTSD in a number of ways, including:

  • Helping to understand emotions and to cope with them in a healthy way.

  • Identifying and changing the negative thought patterns that can contribute to PTSD. These thoughts can include things like, “I’m not good enough,” or “I’m not worth anything.”

  • Managing and reducing stress. This can be important for people with PTSD, as stress can trigger symptoms of the disorder.

  • Building healthy and supportive relationships. Social support is often one of the key factors in recovery from trauma.

  • Developing a sense of control over their lives for those who may feel like they have lost control after experiencing a traumatic event.

Overall, EFT can be a helpful treatment for people with PTSD. If you or someone you know has PTSD, consider seeking out a therapist who specializes in EFT.

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) Essentials

This course introduces EFIT, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, the individual therapy version of the well-established EFT couple model. This attachment-based, experiential model allows the therapist to confidently restructure the client’s habitual way of constructing moment-to-moment experience & regulating their most difficult emotions. EFIT focuses on helping a client shape a coherent, resilient, secure sense of self — able to explore & resolve the deeper emotional pain underlying depression, anxiety, & the echoes of traumas.

As with EFT for couples, attachment science offers the EFIT therapist a map to clarify the nature of client problems & symptoms, specifying the steps in the journey toward emotional balance & the corrective emotional epiphanies that are the essence of significant & lasting change in psychotherapy.

Transforming Trauma with Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT)

“Go back to the scene ― can you take me there? What is it like in that place?”

Trauma isolates. It creates emotional numbing and makes it hard to know what and who can really be counted on...

...and its symptoms can make therapy ― which thrives in an atmosphere of connection, emotional accessibility, and trust ― very challenging.

Your suggestions for coping feel like they're not enough to match your clients' suffering.

And attempts at trauma processing seem overwhelming to them.

Rooted in attachment science, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) can reliably transform pivotal traumatic moments so your traumatized clients can fully engage in their lives again.

And with this exclusive offer, you'll train in this innovative approach directly with Dr. Sue Johnson's training partner, master trainer Dr. Leanne Campbell ― completely FREE.

You'll get a proven, easy-to-understand roadmap to create change, along with, the knowledge and skills to create a powerful, healing connection through which your clients can reliably recover from trauma.

Don't let this opportunity pass you by ― it may not come again, and capacity is limited.

Workshops 8 & 11: Echoes of Trauma: Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) for Individuals with Trauma
May 7, 2024 8:30 am - 11:45 am & 12:45 pm - 4:00 pm MDT

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT; S. Johnson) is best known as a potent couple intervention but has always, from its inception, been used in clinical practice with individuals.  This workshop focuses on Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) as it applies to working with individuals struggling with the echoes of trauma.  Attachment science and an Experiential Humanistic approach offer a map that simplifies how we view and frame clients’ problems, and how we intervene across the three-stage therapy process.  The ‘experiential assessment’ tunes the therapist into clients’ strengths and vulnerabilities to chart clients’ therapeutic journey toward a felt sense of security with self and others – the pathway to symptom resolution and the antidote to trauma.

Master Class: Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) for Trauma

Mental Health Academy Australia

Join Dr. Sue Johnson, key developer of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Dr. Leanne Campbell, co-author of the first book on the application of EFT to individuals in this four-hour master class.  Sue and Leanne will provide you with a glimpse into their therapy rooms as they describe and demonstrate the power and potency of EFIT (Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy) in working with trauma with their individual therapy clients.  An attachment-based humanistic experiential model, this approach provides therapists with an empirically-validated three-stage roadmap, and a tried and proven set of interventions to move clients from suffering and stuck places to healing and growth.  Learn how to make sense of your clients’ difficulties through the lens of attachment, harness the power of emotion to transform trauma, and unleash an organic growth process.  A well-established model of therapy grounded in over thirty years of research, EFT is known to grow therapists and clients alike! Sue and Leanne look forward to growing with you!

In this course, participants will learn:

1.      How to join with clients as temporary attachment figures to create a safe haven alliance – the foundation of any successful therapy

2.      How to understand trauma from an attachment perspective, and the key roles of interventions such as tracking, reflection and validation in shifting clients from shame into compassion

3.      How to apply the simple five-move set of macro-interventions, the EFIT Tango, to create change in every session

DAY 1:  What is EFIT? Let’s see!

In the first half of this course, Sue will provide an overview of the essential nature of the EFIT model.  Participants will gain an understanding of why EFIT, with its focus on attachment and emotion, is particularly suited to working with trauma, and how the EFIT Tango provides a reliable guide for therapists in every session.  When Sue takes participants into her therapy space and demonstrates the Tango with her client who presents with a host of disorders ranging from depression and anxiety to PTSD and borderline personality disorder, participants will begin to see and feel the power of EFIT!

DAY 2:  Dancing Tango and Reshaping Self

The second half of the course will provide participants with a closer look at the EFIT Tango, and how the Tango is flexibly applied as the client moves through the three-stage model.  Participants will meet M., a client with a complex trauma history, who at the outset of therapy was at risk for suicide and highly skeptical of therapy.  Demonstrating the use of the Tango in Stage 2, Leanne will walk participants ‘move-by-move’ through a session with M., demonstrating the power of EFIT in reshaping self and relationship narratives.  This session will most certainly highlight what Sue and Leanne mean when they say, “EFIT goes beyond symptom reduction, it changes the client’s sense of who they are —the self – and their most important relationships!”

Supporting Couples in Trauma with Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT)

Leading Edge Seminars

With a clear roadmap and on-target interventions, EFT is an empirically validated treatment approach that meets the gold standard set out by bodies such as the American Psychological Association (APA) and has been shown to be effective in assisting couples in both addressing trauma and improving their relationship functioning. In her book, Attachment Theory in Practice (c. 2019), Dr. Sue Johnson notes two key implications of attachment science for clinical practice. That is, “harnessing the power of emotion within the client is the most potent way to promote change” and “change is inherently interpersonal, sculpted by the emotional messages that occur in dialogue with another” (Johnson, 2019, p. 25). Recognizing that the relationship can be a key resource in healing trauma, this training will focus on how to work relationally with couples to heal the potentially pervasive and deleterious impacts of personal trauma.

Participants will discover:

· The attachment humanistic perspective on clients, problems and interventions, with a specific focus on understanding the impacts of trauma from an attachment perspective

· The goals, stages, and key change events of the EFCT model

· How to weave the impacts of trauma into the couple’s relationship cycle in a way that informs the couple and the therapeutic process

· The five moves of the EFT Tango and how the Tango is used to shape corrective emotional experiences, transforming trauma and deepening the relationship bond
